The Lance, the official student newspaper at the University of Windsor, is currently seeking qualified individuals for the 2013-2014 publishing season. The newspaper offers engaging coverage on a variety of topics of interest to the university and surrounding communities. The Lance distributes 10,000 issues weekly to over 110 locations on and off campus.
Working at the Lance offers great rewards including exposure as a budding journalist, a chance to hone your management and creative talents and, of course, contribute to debate and engagement on campus and in the community.
All positions are open to post-secondary students, graduates or anyone with related skills and experience. Editor-in-Chief

The Editor in Chief’s primary responsibility is to edit and publish The Lance newspaper at the University of Windsor, and its online venues including its website, uwindsorlance.ca, and social media accounts. The editor is responsible for all hiring at The Lance, maintaining budgets, internal staffing issues, including disciplining staff and volunteers.
The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for duties of other staffed positions in accordance with meeting weekly deadlines as necessary. The editor is responsible for all aspects of the editorial and business side of The Lance, delegating responsibilities and deadlines. You will have the responsibility of delegating tasks between the Managing Editor and Business Manager on a weekly basis.
Qualifications:
- Completed or working towards a university degree or college diploma in journalism, communications, English, or equivalent
- Experience writing/editing for a print or online publication
- Experience hiring, managing and training staff preferred
- Experience in volunteer recruitment and management
- Able to lead meetings and create and deliver workshops with confidence
- Experience creating and adhering to budgets and strategic plans
- Able to work well under pressure and meet tight weekly deadlines
- Knowledge and/or experience with advertising design practices and software such as Adobe CS5 (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere)

The business manager is responsible for creating and balancing the annual budget, overseeing day-to-day financial operations, managing debt and expenses, determining salaries in conjunction with the editor-in-chief and performing any other duties as assigned by the editor-in-chief. The business manager is also responsible for implementing all binding decisions to the staff and acting as a member of the Lance Oversight Board.
The business manager is also responsible for human resource duties such as maintaining employee files, assisting the editor-in-chief with staff hiring, creating new employee packages and acting as a HR representative for staff. The manager also works with the editor-in-chief to develop internal policies and HR and operational strategies.
Qualifications
- Working towards or completed a university degree or college diploma in business administration, commerce, human resources, or equivalent and experience in accounting or human resources
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and Simply Accounting software
- Experience in a management and/human resource position is desirable

The Advertising Manager reports to the business manager. The successful candidate is responsible for generating weekly advertising revenue determined by the business manager and editor-in-chief and cultivating and maintaining excellent relationships with local advertisers and the Lance’s national advertising agency, Campus Plus.
The advertising manager will act as a liaison between advertisers and the Lance editorial board and production manager. They will uphold and make recommendations to improve the guidelines set forth by the Lance Advertising Policy. The advertising manager will attend weekly production meetings and hold regular office hours. They will prepare a plan for growing revenues across the print and digital editions of the Lance, as well as generating performance/advertising revenue reports.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in marketing, advertising, business administration, or equivalent and experience in marketing, sales and promotions
- Experience in marketing, sales and promotions
- Able to create and manage The Lance’s advertising strategies

The managing editor shall provide support to the editor-in-chief with respect to editorial work and administration, and shall be a resource for staff and first point of contact with volunteers.
The managing editor will assist the editor-in-chief with copy editing and write articles as needed. The editor will oversee a team of department editors, actively solicit volunteers to work with editors and is expected to maintain a welcoming office atmosphere.
The selected individual will ensure that all editorial work is completed to the production schedule, and will, in the case of a temporary vacancy, perform the duties of editor-in-chief, including administrative matters and chairing weekly meetings.
The managing editor will work with the editor-in-chief to co-ordinate staff events and training sessions, as well as volunteer and community events.

Section editors are responsible to the managing editor for actively seeking, assigning, writing, editing and laying out of relevant stories for the Lance. They must possess strong writing and editing skills and the ability to generate original story ideas.
The news editor is expected to recruit, train and supervise volunteer writers for their section. They must work with the multimedia editor to ensure the inclusion of photos and videos with stories, and may be required to shoot and/or edit photographs and videos for assigned stories.
Editors will attend weekly editorial meetings and organize and participate in volunteer information sessions and training workshops. They are expected to hold part-time office hours during the week and perform other duties required by the editor-in-chief and managing editor.

- Working towards or completed a university degree or college diploma in journalism, communications, English AND/OR experience in editing and journalistic writing
- Knowledge of Canadian Press Style guidelines is desirable

The opinion and feature editor will research, report and write one feature article for each print and web edition of the Lance. The editor will possess a demonstrated flair and interest in long form writing and an ability to generate story topics of interest to University of Windsor students and community.
The opinion and feature editor is also responsible for writing one editorial article for each issue, and for soliciting, receiving and editing submitted letters and opinion pieces.
The selected person must attend weekly editorial meetings to pitch and develop feature story ideas. They will work with the production manager and multimedia editor to determine suitable graphics, layout options and multimedia elements for each feature story. The editor will be required to oversee the editorial comic and work with its illustrator.
Qualifications
- Working towards or completed a university degree or college diploma in journalism, communications, English or equivalent AND/OR related writing experience
- Knowledge of Canadian Press Style guidelines is desirable
- Ability to generate feature and opinion topics relevant to University of Windsor students, campus and community

The art director is responsible for the production and design of the Lance’s print and web publications. They must maintain the highest possible quality in page design and copy editing. They will work with the managing editor to correct pages after the layouts have been approved by the section editors. They are also expected to work with the advertising manager to design advertisements for clients. The art director will work with department editors to design exciting, creative graphics and layout designs to accompany articles.
The art director will work with the managing editor to ensure that computer software is maintained. They will perform other duties as assigned by the managing editor.
Qualifications
- Working towards or completed a university degree or college diploma in graphic design, visual arts, communications, journalism, or equivalent AND/OR experience in print production, graphic or advertising design and editing
- Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
- Knowledge of Canadian Press Style guidelines is desirable
- Production experience at a student or community newspaper is an asset
- Knowledge of web user interface design, emerging design technologies and social media tools are desirable

The multimedia editor is responsible for the production of short videos for the Lance each week. The editor must shoot/record, edit and write scripts for videos to accompany stories or highlight campus events. They will work with the managing editor and section editors to package stories online using multimedia supplements.
The multimedia editor is also responsible for shooting and editing photos for inclusion in the Lance newspaper and its online assets. The individual will accompany department editors to cover stories around campus and surrounding Windsor community, or co-ordinate volunteer photographers. The selected person is expected to attend weekly editorial meetings.
Qualifications
- Working towards or completed a university degree or college diploma in journalism, communications, photography, visual arts or equivalent AND/OR experience with multimedia and photography production
- Experience shooting photos and videos with a digital SLR camera
- Experience editing and optimizing photos for print and/or web use
- Strong ability to edit and optimize HD-quality videos and audio using Adobe Creative Suite programs, or equivalent software
- Sharp, concise script writing, shot listing and storyboarding skills
- Ability to upload content to websites and social media networks

Reports to: Business Manager

The circulation manager is responsible for the weekly distribution of the Lance to various newsstands at the University of Windsor campus and to business in Windsor’s west side, downtown and Walkerville communities. They will also collect remaining newsstand issues each week to be recycled or archived.
The manager must fill out weekly circulation reports and work with the business manager to develop a plan for improving newspaper distribution.
Qualifications
- Experience in print distribution or delivery is an asset
- Must be punctual with excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Access to a reliable vehicle and driver’s licence is required
- Ability to effectively communicate with management regarding distribution outcomes and goals
