“Innovative” is how the president of a local credit union is describing a new branch that opened today in West-Windsor.
The newest Windsor Family Credit Union (WFCU) retail location opened its doors at 12 p.m. in the University of Windsor’s Innovation Centre at the corner of Wyandotte St. West and Sunset Ave.
Marty Komsa, president and CEO of WFCU, said he knew over a year ago from the University’s request for proposal presentation that acquisition of the space would require fresh ideas and a close relationship with the campus community.
“The word innovation kept coming up in their presentation,” said Komsa. “We were astute enough to pick up on that concept … We submitted between eight and 10 innovative processes to involve students, faculty, and the whole university population in the activities centered around the retail location.”
The credit union is immersing itself in the campus community by providing scholarship and employment opportunities for university students, offering financial literacy programs, and partnering with the International Student Centre to help students from abroad set up new accounts.
In addition, the new location has a 24-hour ATM and its hours of operation accommodate the University calendar.
University president Alan Wildeman welcomed WFCU to campus, saying he is “delighted” about the opening and the new location will “support the campus and create a lot of opportunities for students.”
Komsa said he has intended to bring WFCU to West Windsor for over five years, but the timing and location of previous proposals did not work out.
“Now, with the University doing as well as it’s doing and the neighborhoods around here seem to be somewhat revitalized,” said Komsa, “we feel the timing is right.”
