Two Lancers men’s volleyball players take it to the beach

ancers Sven Trodel and Greg Simone were named to the Ontario Beach Volleyball team that will play in the national championships Aug. 17-19 in British Columbia.

Trodel, a rookie with the Lancers Men’s Volleyball team, was recruited from the OFSAA championships where his Sudbury team won a bronze medal. He was named to the 18U beach volleyball team that will compete on the Spanish Banks Beach in the youth nationals.

Simone, a native of London, Ont., played with the Lancers head coach in 2009 when they won the Regional Games in Ontario. The sophmore will play with the 24U Ontario squad in the senior nationals.

“It doesn’t surprise me that these athletes have been named to this team.” Lippert said in a press release.

“The work ethic on these guys is one of the reasons we wanted them to be wearing a Lancer jersey.

“There has been a revolution with athletics in the last five years around campus. The teams are breeding an elite level of athlete. It’s not enough just to be good at Windsor. You have to want to be the best. And these athletes are proving they belong to walk around here.”

Teams in both divisions will compete in pool play on the Friday and the Saturday with finals taking place Sunday. The senior tournament is divided into two divisions.

Divisions from 14U boys and girls through senior men’s and women’s teams will complete at the event.
